Personal Branding: Why It Matters

(+ How to Build It)

Written by: Jen Warrington, Founder of The Warrington Group

Let’s get one thing straight:

Your personal brand is not a logo, a color palette, or some fluffy buzzword that only influencers care about.

It’s how people describe you when you’re not in the room.

It’s the feeling you leave behind after a job interview, a Zoom call, or even a LinkedIn comment.

It’s the why behind your “Hire Me” (+ yes, it’s a big deal.)

In fact, 85% of hiring managers say your personal brand influences their decision to hire you.

So if your current strategy is: “Let my resume speak for itself,” we’ve got to talk.

WHAT IS PERSONAL BRAND (REALLY)?

Personal branding is the clarity + confidence behind how you show up in your career.

It’s the story your resume should be telling.

The tone your LinkedIn should be giving.

The vibe that makes recruiters say: “We need to talk to them.”

It’s your career identity +  most people completely ignore it.

You look just like every other candidate

  • Your resume sounds like a copy-paste of your job description

  • Your LinkedIn headline? “Marketing Specialist at Company XYZ” (yikes)

  • You apply to dozens of roles + hear nothing back

  • You undersell yourself in interviews because you’re not sure what sets you apart

  • You get ghosted, passed over, or offered less than you’re worth, because no one can see your value.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU DON’T HAVE A PERSONAL BRAND?

You stop applying blindly + start attracting recruiters

  • Your LinkedIn tells a clear story of who you are + what you bring

  • Your resume reflects your impact, not just your job title

  • You show up to interviews like the obvious hire

  • You land bigger offers (because your value is undeniable)

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU BUILD A BRAND?

HOW TO BUILD A PERSONAL BRAND THAT GETS YOU HIRED.

You don’t need to be famous.

You just need to be intentional.

Start with these 3 questions:

  1. What do you want to be known for?

→ Not your title, your impact.

  2. What kind of work energizes you (vs. drains you)?

→ Build around what lights you up.

  3. What strengths do people come to you for again and again?

    → That’s your secret sauce.

Now put that on your resume.

In your LinkedIn headline.

In the way you answer “Tell me about yourself.”

That’s your brand.

It’s not about faking it.

It’s about finally owning it.

BOTTOM LINE

If you’re job searching, pivoting careers, or just tired of getting passed over—

Personal branding is your unfair advantage.

✅ It sets you apart.

✅ It helps recruiters find you.

✅ It gets you hired faster + paid more.

This isn’t optional anymore.

It’s the difference between blending in + standing out.
